Joining Hands for Truth and Reconciliation: Reflecting on September 30th, 2024

As autumn sets in and the days grow shorter, we are reminded that this time of year invites reflection, understanding, and the need for deeper connections. On September 30th, Canada observed the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation—a moment to remember the painful legacy of the Residential School system and to honour the survivors among us.

At PAPER LABEL, we acknowledge the weight of this day, recognizing its significance in the journey toward healing and justice for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. As we move forward, it is crucial that we not only acknowledge the history but also act on our commitment to support Indigenous peoples in meaningful ways.

Wear Orange with Intention

On September 30th, wearing orange goes beyond fashion—it becomes a symbol of remembrance and solidarity. The colour reflects the legacy of Residential Schools, inspired by the story of Phyllis Webstad, whose orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at a Residential School. Wearing orange is a visual statement of support for survivors and a reminder of the work still to be done to foster reconciliation.

A Commitment to Give Back

This year, PAPER LABEL is taking a stand. Throughout October, 2% of our sales will support the Indian Residential School Survivor Society (IRSSS), a long-standing organization providing critical support to survivors. By extending our contributions, we aim to create lasting change and offer sustained support to Indigenous communities.

Learn, Listen, and Act: The Road to Reconciliation

Reconciliation requires action, and education is a critical first step. The effects of Residential Schools continue to reverberate across generations, and learning about these histories helps us understand how we can contribute to change.

Here are a few ways to deepen your understanding:

  • Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and the Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
  • Explore the resources at the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Engage with the stories of survivors through tours of former Residential School sites, such as those hosted by the Woodland Cultural Centre.
  • Research and learn more about the Indigenous nations in your local area to understand their cultural contributions and histories.

Join Us on the Journey Toward Change

At PAPER LABEL, we believe that truth and reconciliation require ongoing effort, education, and support. We invite you to stand with us on September 30th, but more importantly, we encourage you to carry these reflections and actions into your everyday life. Together, through compassion and learning, we can move closer to true reconciliation and healing.

With love,
PAPER LABEL
